Bird Skating Rink

No, this one is not large enough for emu, but we have enough smaller varieties around to enjoy during the winter months and it seemed only fitting that we create some sort of entertainment for them.

You will need a 55 gallon drum or some other large container, water, a base for the skating rink and temperature below freezing.  Please note that the shape of the skating rink will be dependent upon the individual 55 gallon drum or container used.

Start by filling the dipping drum with water late in the day when you know freezing temperatures will occur overnight.

The next morning you should have a solid block of ice, suitable for the skating rink.  Apply pressure to one side of the block to dislodge it.  You may not be able to do this until noon or spring, depending on where you live.  You may use a hot air gun to facilitate this step.  Carefully remove the ice from the drum.  Take care not to splash, especially any areas that you don't want to shrivel up and hibernate until summer.

Place the skating rink on a base and step back to watch the fun.

It may take a while for the birds to find your skating rink, but if the weather holds, you will eventually see some interesting activity on your skating rink.
